Seventy minutes written.  I'm sprinting for Friday, but it's going to be a close shave.

Once the first draft is done, I'm hoping to take a couple of weeks to do some basic concepting while I make script revisions.  Before I start storyboarding, I'd like at least a general notion of what the characters, vehicles, and settings look like.  I feel like parts of my brain have atrophied over the last two months -- it'll be nice to push the stylus around a little bit.

Also good: once the sketching starts, I'll have something concrete to share on this blog.

Is This Thing On?

My last post here was in 2015. Returning to this page, I was a little surprised to discover that it was even still online, or that blogs were even still a thing. Perhaps they aren't really anymore? I have no idea. It's pretty interesting to see how many of the links on this page are now dead. The world has moved on. When last we met, I was in the late stages of learning that Nonplayer #2 was not going to provide the magic leverage to turn comics into a full time day job. Given the unsustainability of my schedule back then (drawing the comic in the wee hours of the morning while having a day job and raising a kid), it really was a hail Mary situation -- I'm not even really sure what form I thought the deus ex machina would take. Maybe Nonplayer would get turned into a movie? Maybe I could pivot to Patreon? In the end, I had to stop out of sheer exhaustion.  I didn't give up. Paint by Numbers

First-pass color on page 1. Click to enlarge. More after the image. Even more than with the original line art, it's taking me a long time to figure out whether something works or not. Right now, I'm mostly shooting from the hip. I know I don't want muddy color, and I'm avoiding using black for shadows. I'm trying to use new blend modes to modulate the color of the linework, itself (see leaves in background of panel 1). I'm also trying to keep all the panels on one page in the same color key (though I'm not sure I've pulled that off here). That connects to a bigger lesson I've been learning over the past month: a comic page isn't a collection of smaller drawings -- it is one big drawing, and the panel borders and speech bubbles are all part of the composition. I've been seeing lots of pretty art lately. How about I pull a royalboiler and just, you know, show some of it? Here's M.C. Barrett : You have to see this guy's sketchbook . Watching him go to town on that thing last week, I felt simultaneously inspired to start a sketchbook of my own and ashamed to even make an attempt. I love his composition instincts. It's like he's constitutionally incapable of making an uninteresting image: One more by Mr. Barrett: Next up,  John Kantz . One day I want to write a comic and have him draw it.
