Chasing Windmills

I've been seeing lots of pretty art lately. How about I pull a royalboiler and just, you know, show some of it?

Here's M.C. Barrett:

You have to see this guy's sketchbook. Watching him go to town on that thing last week, I felt simultaneously inspired to start a sketchbook of my own and ashamed to even make an attempt. I love his composition instincts. It's like he's constitutionally incapable of making an uninteresting image:

One more by Mr. Barrett:

Next up, John Kantz. One day I want to write a comic and have him draw it.

But can he draw environments? Yes.

Here's Marcel O'Leary, who is going to be famous someday:

Check out this page from his 24-hour comic. I can't believe this guy graduated from art school this month.

This next thing is from Clement Sauve, a brilliant artist from Montreal who passed away a few months ago. He left us some rare gems:

What a tremendous loss. It's all so beautiful:

Oh, and I found Benoit Springer's blog! Here's what he does:

Sort of like Moebius and Mignola had art babies:

I'll sneak in one more by this guy. Wowee.

Man, I need to go back to school or something. I need an art tutor.

In other news, I'm still working on Nonplayer #2. When I've got the final color locked down for the first few pages, I'll post them here. Gonnamakeit. Gonnamakeit. Gonnamakeit.

P.S. If you've sent me a message in the last two months and I haven't answered, please be patient. I am slowly working through the backlog, and I will reply as soon as I can. Thanks.

  5. Another artist you might wanna check out is my brother, Ryan:

He's completely non-digital and does some really cool, retro looking stuff inspired by vintage movie posters and pulps. You guys are from different art worlds, but you'd probably enjoy his work. I picked up a copy of Nonplayer for him, and he was really into the artwork. His first comment was "Wow, this feels a lot like Geof Darrow!"

  6. I love the Barrett stuff....sketch books are where its at. That first idea never gets fresher than when its first ejected from the brain, it can only get more refined.

  7. Hey, I thought that NP#1 was totally worth the wait! I don't know if I've expressed how I've felt about it before, but that book is what I look at when I'm feeling too lazy.
Anyway, I was wondering what you mean by saying that you would have released your comic in a digital formal if you had to do it over again. I'm coming really close to a place where I can show what I'm doing. Despite the fact that I have to make it a page longer than I thought. I'm not sure if what you are doing will work for me since my story is more like a documentary rather than a fictional piece, but I'd still love to hear your thoughts.

  8. Inverce - Yeah, Brandon's blog is one of the few blogs that I actively look forward to reading every week. That man is a force for good in the universe.

Diantres - I know, right? As always, I'm looking forward to some new prettiness from you, Rodrigo!

tylerpistol - Oh, man, your brother's artwork is a trip! I love the references to classic sci-fi illustration. I have a strong suspicion that Ryan is doing very well for himself these days. It's great to hear he liked Nonplayer. Thanks!

  9. umanbn - Yes, that's right! Someone should write that advice on a brick and hit me in the face with it when I wake up every morning.

tormentedartist - Thanks, man! What a strange trip it's been, huh? I'm pretty stoked that your book will be on shelves soon. I can't believe we both made it across the finish (starting?) line!

As for wanting to release through a digital format -- I think that'll make the most sense in a couple of years once we've got a well-established e-book customer base and some higher-resolution color e-readers. Then you won't have to worry about splitting revenue with publishers/retailers, and you'll never be limited to finite print runs. It'll be a brave new world!

  10. Whoa...I'm not close to being finished with the book. Its more like a demo version of said book. When the demo is done then I'm be a little more forth coming with details. So I'm like at the starting gate waiting for the gun to go off.

BTW I too had my Comic Con experience. But I didn't take it that badly, I just knew that I had to get better : ) I mean I saw what some of the other kids were doing and it was much better than the crap that I had. I mean it was hard, but I wouldn't have hired me either : )
